  • Why Capitalism Does Not Work
Capitalism is presently in crisis. Western economies have been in slump since March 2001, and despite the wishful thinking of bankers and government politicians the end is nowhere in sight. Everywhere we see layoffs, closures, cutbacks and shortage, and yet only 1 year ago all the pundits were praising the virtues of the economy. A thinking member of the working class can be left with only one conclusion - the capitalists do not understand their own system. (by Alex Grant - Editor of the Canadian news paper L’Humanité)

  • Unemployment, the Media, and Capitalism
Recently, the giant mining corporation Phelps Dodge, announced the lay-offs of over 1500 jobs, which meant even more lay-offs for the small business that rely on Phelps Dodge for business, and the destruction of many small communities in the south-west of the United States. By Patrick Kenyon. (April, 2001)
  • School Shootings: Who Are The Real Victims?
The past month has seen more school shootings in predominantly wealthy white areas and more speculation about this seemingly "unexplainable" issue. Yet contrary to what the media purports and to what Bush and others would have us believe, these recent acts of violence do not go without cause and solutions. Indeed it is precisely the potential solutions that frighten those who are the most ardent in calling for action to address school shootings. The responsibility for these acts lays not merely with the misguided and alienated youths who pull the triggers but with the social system of which they are a product. (March 2001)
  • Capitalism's Hold On the School System
The American school system has always proudly proclaimed that it encourages students to think. Common buzzwords used on school bulletins and placards are "creativity," "independence," and "self-motivation." These are reasonable and admirable goals for any educational institution. However, investigation reveals that the schools of this country do not really promote this freedom and independence. By Molly Linder. (March 16th, 2001)
  • Bush's Labor Policy
Marxists have always said that the state is nothing more than a tool used exclusively for the interests of the owners of capital and against the interests of the working class. The interests of the working class and the interests of the bourgeoisie are nearly always in contradiction to one another. President Bush's recent and very open actions against the interests of the working class exemplify perfectly the antagonisms between the working class and the bourgeois; the oppressed and oppressor. By Kristopher Marc. (March 2001)
  • Bush Attacks Workers' Rights!
As the extended war against labor continues in a string of anti-worker legislation, Congress repealed the ergonomics guidelines that were implemented with the advice of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. By Matthew Wackerle. (March 2001)

  • Marx was right: it's official!
A decade ago in the heady days of 'capitalism's final triumph', when the New World Order was announced and the End of History proclaimed, the century old industry of writing learned tomes under which to bury the ideas of Marxism appeared to have become redundant. New volumes began to line the library shelves to explain that capitalism was the height of human social evolution. In passing one notes the low level of ambition of these people who believe that a system that leaves two thirds of the world's population in dire poverty, that keeps a billion people unemployed or underemployed, is the best that we can achieve. Yet before one could finish reading a single volume of these confused scribblings, the New World Order choked beneath the ashes of war in the Balkans; the south east Asian economies collapsed; leaving the New Paradigm hanging by the single thread of the innovations associated with new technology. By Phil Mitchinson. (October 2000)
  • Unpopular Capitalism
Amid the protests taking place in Prague against the International Monetary Fund, pollsters everywhere are detecting a growing anti-corporate mood throughout the major capitalist countries. After years of privatisation, stock market euphoria and propaganda about the wonders of the capitalist market, the pendulum is certainly swinging in the opposite direction. Karl Marx once said that "social being determines social consciousness." As we predicted, years of downsizing and corporate domination are causing a reaction not only amongst the working class, but also in the middle class. All too often the capitalist media and their shadows in the labour movement, attempt to paint a picture that everything is wonderful in the market economy. For the strategists of capital, the golden economy is piling up wealth and prosperity on an unimaginable scale. Everyone is a winner in this corporate world. But the growing mood in society is a lot different. By Rob Sewell. (October 2000)
  • The Political Situation of the Youth in the West
It is clear that there is a rising tide of activism across the planet. From Seattle to Prague, the new protest movement signifies the begining of a broader movement of the masses. But how can we harness this energy and enthusiasm in order to transform the world? Tom Rollings from the UK explains how Marxists can intervene in these movements in order to build a revolutionary alternative to capitalism. (October, 2000)

  • Raising Prices, Raising Consciousness
Analisa Drew takes a brief look at the effect of rising gas prices on the average American's outlook. An economic slump would be a nightmare for working people, and their views on the status quo will be shaken to the core. Yet another sign of the changing mood in America. (June 23, 2000)
  • London May Day Protests - Hypocrisy of the capitalist press and politicians
The violent flair up in London on May Day which resulted in damage to a McDonald's restaurant and other property has caused outrage in the capitalist press and amongst bourgeois politicians of every stripe. Rob Sewell and Steve Jones demolish the hypocrisy of the capitalist press and politicians and criticise the heavy handed methods of the police which was out in massive numbers. (May 3, 2000)

  • Fashion Victims - Textile and Clothing Workers Worldwide
There's a saying among girls in the slums of Bangladesh: if you're lucky, you'll be a prostitute - if you're unlucky, you'll be a garment worker. The fashion industry is big business. It makes a lot of money - but the workers in the industry don't see much of it. All over the world, textile and clothing workers are poor. Yet they work hard. They say nobody ever got rich though hard work. But it's not true. The people who work hard never got rich through working hard. But the rich got rich by getting other people like us to work hard for them. That's the way of the world under capitalism. (March 17, 2000)
  • Police Officers are Acquitted of Immigrant’s Murder
Natasha Wilson looks at the tragedy of Amadou Diallo's murder. Until the police are no longer a separate repressive body which is not accountable to the people they are supposed to serve, tragedies like this will continue! (March 3, 2000)

Let's be honest: you'll never win the lottery. On the other hand, the chances are pretty good that you'll slave away at some miserable job the rest of your life.
