Global Warming and the Kyoto Agreement
Global warming is arguably the greatest single threat facing humanity. Yet US president George W. Bush appears largely oblivious to the problem, denying the evidence that is growing at an alarming rate. Regular reports from the 3000 scientists involved with the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have been issued over the past number of years. Over this period their refined climate model has consistently increased the projected effects of global warming. So w hy is President Bush in a state of denial? Colin Penfold looks i nto the interests of the multinational corporations that underly the present impasse. (July, 2001)

Foot and mouth - a disease of the profit system
Over the past weeks the news has been dominated by the story of yet another crisis in farming. Appalling pictures of funeral pyres of animal victims of the foot and mouth outbreak have even made the front page of stateside-based 'Time' magazine. What is going on? By Mick Brooks. (March 13th, 2001)

Global Warming -
A Socialist Perspective
"According to the defenders of capitalism and the "free market", socialism in general and Marxism in particular is
all but dead and buried. However it may be instructive to examine one of the main environmental problems created
by the free market, namely global warming. This has been described as the greatest disaster facing humankind, not
to mention a myriad of other species! The question is can the capitalist system find a global solution?"

Genetic Engineering: Who Benefits?
Genetic engineering has come upon the world with a rush, accompanied by
the usual claims of being a way of feeding the earth's poor and removing
want. However these claims need to examined in the light of what has
actually been done to date, and what is planned for the future. In fact
the impetus for the development of genetic engineering, namely the rapid
pursuit of maximum profits and further control of world agriculture runs
counter to the stated aims as well as encouraging unsafe science. By Alan
Durant. (March 2000)

Against the WTO! Come to Seattle!
November 30th through December 3rd, the World Trade Organization is
holding their third "ministerial conference" in Seattle, Washington. An
estimated number of up to 50,000 protesters will meet in Seattle for one of the biggest
protests in radical politics of the century. We would like to announce that YFIS
has plans to be an active participant in this incredible event.
- It has Everything to do

- Why We Cannot Trust the Food
Industry
Sewage-fed cows, "mad cows", dioxin contaminated chickens, hormone injected
cattle, genetically modified Soya, animal carcasses used to make animal feed, contaminated
mineral water and Coca-Cola. A common thread runs through all these cases: the search for
the highest profits on the part of the food industry to the detriment of everybody's
health. Michele Fabbri, Italian Marxist magazine Falce Martello. (October, 1999)
- GM Foods: Feeding the Corporation
According to Monsanto, the American multinational currently making vast profits
out of genetically modified food, the future's so bright that they could genetically
modify us to wear shades! Joking apart, there is a serious issue here. Are GM foods safe?
