Report on the Anti-NATO movement in Spain

The Students' Union is organizing a campaign against the war.  It is a very difficult thing (I imagine even more so in the US) due to the campagn of lies and propaganda by the imperialists which is savage and appeals to the sensitivity of people in the sense of focusing on the fact that Milosevic is a dictator and must be done away with by any means necessary.  Combine that with the fact that the "social democrats" support imperialism, and the situation is totally confused.  Also, in many "left-wing" youth and workers' organizations the leaders are saying that this intervention is the "lesser of many evils".   Aside from the Student Union, the only other group to come out against the war has been the United Left (Communist Party of Spain), but in such a confusing way that it doesn't help the masses reach the correct conclusions.  For example, at first, the main focus of their propaganda was that NATO had intervened without the consent of the UN, instead of unmasking the reactionary role played by this organization (the UN).  Now they are making things even worse because the head of the United Left has said that, "Milosevic is a murderer, but he is "left wing", and THAT is why they are bombing him."  So the people get confused thinking, "but if he is a murderer, how can he be left wing?"  As you can imagine that creates more confusion, and the people think, "well if he is a murderer, then they should get rid of him."

While the demonstrations have not been very numerous, the atmosphere has been very advanced.  Keep in mind what I said earlier.  What matters is that the Students' Union has struck the first blow and made clear its position of opposition to NATO in demonstrations on the streets.

El SE está organizando una campaña contra la guerra. Es un tema muy dfiícil (imagino que allí más) pues la campaña de mentiras y propaganda del imperialismo es salvaje y además utiliza los sentimientos sanos de la gente en el sentido de plantear que Milosevic es un dictador y que hay que acabar con él, sea como sea. Si a esto unimos que la socialdemocracia en pleno apoya al imperialismo, la confusión es total. Incluso en sectores de los jóvenes y trabajadores de izquierda se plantea que la intervención es "la solución menos mala" que es lo que le dicen sus dirigentes. Por otra parte la única fuerza, además de nosotros, que ha movilizado contra la guerra ha sido Izquierda Unida (PCE), pero de una manera muy confusa que no ayuda a la mayoría a sacar conclusiones. Por ejemplo, en un primer momento el tema central de su propaganda era que la OTAN (NATO) había intervenido sin el consentimiento de la ONU, en lugar de desenmascarar el papel de esta organización. Después lo están empeorando porque su máximo dirigente ha dicho que "Milosevic es un asesino, pero es de izquierdas y por eso le bombardean", con lo cual ya me dirás, la gente piensa "Si es un asesino, ¿cómo puede ser de izquierdas? Como puedes comprender eso crea más confusión y en definitiva la gente piensa, "bueno, pues si es un asesino, que acaben con él".
