Solidarity Campaigns

The support of international comrades means A LOT to workers and youth struggling for their rights in difficult conditions around the world!  Let them know you care!  Only the unity of working people and youth of ALL nations, races, genders, and ethnic groups can end the poverty, ignorance and hatred which is inevitable under capitalism.  We will be constantly updating this list of solidarity campaigns and keeping you informed.  Also, if you are sponsoring a campaign, let us know and we will post the information here!

USA

  • International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) calls for the release of the Charleston 5. Picketing longshore workers face felony charges, jail.
For defending their jobs, five longshore workers -- members of ILA longshore Local 1422 and clerks and checkers Local 1771 in Charleston, South Carolina -- face possible imprisonment on state criminal charges. They and some 150 co-workers planned to picket a ship in their port that was using a non-union longshore crew when the state responded with a massive contingent of law enforcement officers and an altercation ensued. The five have been indicted for rioting, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. They could face trial as early as this February. The South Carolina AFL-CIO, with the help of the national AFL-CIO, has initiated an international campaign to defend them and their locals.

Palestine

Morocco and France

  • Mehdi Ben Barka Appeal
We appeal to all labor movement activists for letters of protest, demanding that the French government immediately open all the secret service files on the Ben Barka Affair, and any other material presently covered by the state secrecy laws covering to collaboration between the French State and the Moroccan secret services in relation victims of assassination, torture or imprisonment of opponents of the Hassan II regime. (May, 2000)
  • The Ben Barka affair and the situation in Morocco today
In the interview published in La Riposte, Bachir Ben Barka, the son of Mehdi Ben Barka, the assassinated founder of the Moroccan Socialist Party (USFP), explains the long and largely fruitless struggle waged by his family to obtain access to the files of the French secret services. Towards the end of the interview, Bachir refers to the possibility that the files may at last be opening by the Jospin government. However, whereas certain files were in fact opened, the most important information about who killed Mehdi Ben Barka, on whose orders and in what circumstances, and how the body was disposed of, has been once again withheld from the family under the state secrecy laws.
  • Interview with Mehdi Ben Barka's Son Bachir
This interview was originally published in the French Marxist magazine La Riposte. In it, the son of assasinated Moroccan socialist leader Mehdi Ben Barka explains the reasons why his father was kidnapped and assasinated with the help of the French government. We are launching an international solidarity appeal to force the authorities to re-open this case and make public all the secret documents being witheld from Ben Barka's family.

Pakistan

  • Kashmir - A Paradise in Peril
Revolutionary socialists in Kashmir have set up the Campaign for Socialist Kashmir, arguing that the stuggle for socialism and the spreading of this struggle throughout South Asia is the only solution to the national oppression in Kashmir. (July, 2000)
  • Pakistan Trade Union Defence Campaign
An exremely important urgent call for solidarity and support from Pakistan.  Please re-distribute as widely as possible especially to trade union organizations.  URGENT ACTION REQUIRED!!!   (October 12, 1999)

Nigeria

  • Student Union activists killed in Nigeria by neo-fascist death squad: Eyewitness Account
Below is a report on recent events in Nigeria. Five students were killed by a cultist gang, that is a neo-fascist type organisation, at Ife University. Our comrades were closely involved in the events and some of them are lucky to be alive, as the gang were looking for some of them. Luckily our comrades escaped.

The reports below will give you a clear idea of what is happening in Nigeria. It shows quite clearly that Nigeria is about to join Indonesia and Iran in the revolutionary process that is beginning to develop worldwide.

Unfortunately we got the reports after everything had finished. But messages of solidarity from Trade Union, Student and party organisations would still be very useful.

Mexico

  • Ten years defending the ideas of genuine Marxism in Mexico
July 2000 marks 10 years of uninterrupted publication of Militante, Marxist Voice of Workers and Youth in Mexico. This editorial from our Mexican comrades explains some of their activities over the past ten years, and the perspectives for the future. (Summer, 2000)
  • Mexican Student Strikers Under Threat!
The 6 month long student strike to protest increased student fees at the UNAM in Mexico is being violently attacked by the authorities and hired thugs.  Some strikers have been kidnapped and savagely beaten, and one of our comrades has been accused of making death threats to the thugs and could be sent to prison.  This is of course a lie fabricated by the authorities to destabilize the movement.  We need to mobilize all our resources on an international scale to condemn these actions, and bring a successful end to the strike.

After attempts by the government to privitize the Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the students have democratically voted to go on strike to defend free, quality, democratic education!  The entire UNAM is paralyzed - 267,000 without classes!   Read about the struggle!
