This section will give
you ideas on how to start a Marxist Discussion group if there isn't one already in your
town. Their purpose is to discuss the ideas of genuine Marxism and to intervene in
the local labor and youth movement. With New
Youth, the Marxism FAQ, the study guides and other
educational material available at this site it's easy!
- Test the water with close friends. This is a great way to discuss your ideas with
people you are comfortable speaking to, and a great way to start to put the ideas into
practical application. Ask them if they would be interested in getting together once
a week for an hour or two to have an organized study group - you'll be surprised how many
people say yes!
- Start with the basics - the Communist Manifesto, the basic points of Marxism, etc.
Check out the Marxist Theory section for
some good introductory stuff! It is a good idea to literally read through these
basic works section by section as a group, pausing to discuss at any time anyone has any
questions. The study guides will help!
- Discuss current issues like the bombing of Iraq or Yugoslavia. These issues are
ongoing, and provide a point on which to focus the discussion. The ruling class
media are doing their best to cloud these issues, so read the articles and analyis at this
site and discuss the Marxist viewpoint on these issues. The Marxist perspective is
always a class-based analysis and always takes into account the well-being of the working
class as a whole.
- Put up flyers announcing a public meeting on a specific topic. Either on a current
event, or on Marxism in general. many people are curious about these ideas, and you
might be surprised at the turn out. Even if only one person shows up and are willing
to discuss, you've done well! The hardest part is getting the first person to have a
discussion group with you. Or alternatively, put up flyers with your phone number or
e-mail address so people can contact you to learrn more.
-
Put this flyer in library books!
Copy this flyer, make copies (preferably on red paper!), and print a bunch out and go to your local library! In every book by Marxists or about Marxism or Communism, insert a copy! When people look for Marxist works at the library, they will find the flyer and lead them to our websites! Help spread the word at your local public, college, and highschool libraries!
- Watch movies! Yes, you heard right! Watching movies is a great way to break
the ice. Many movies address social or historical issues, and after watching them
you can discuss them and how they apply to the current situation. A few
recommendations: Roger and Me, The Big One (both by Michael Moore,
who while not really a socialist makes some great points in a humorous way), Land and
Freedom, 1900, Salt of the Earth. Check out our Movie Reviews section for more ideas!
- Hold a barbecue/dinner party. This is a great way to get together with people you
have already been discussing with in a fun, friendly, relaxed atmoshpere. Theme
nights are great - like Italian, Mexican, Greek, etc!
More ideas will be coming soon, and please keep us posted as to the successes of your
discussion groups! We are all in this together, and need to share our experiences
and ideas! Write us at info@newyouth.com.
